NXP Semiconductors announced the launch of the Smart NFC ZigBee remote control 2.0 reference design. The new device with secure ZigBee encryption, which will be demoed at 2015 Embedded World (hall 5, booth 378), enables new sources of revenue to pay-tv, cable and telecom operators, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and Internet service providers (ISPs) previously unfeasible due to security limitations. Consumer benefits include instant media sharing, secure payments and a range of personalisation use cases.
Analysts forecast the smart home market to more than double to reach $71 billion by 2018. The Smart NFC ZigBee remote control 2.0 will enable consumers to seamlessly ‘pair’ and interact with the growing number of connected devices in the home via NFC and ZigBee. The reference design includes two leading NXP solutions, the PN7120 NFC reader and the JN5168 ZigBee Remote Control 2.0 controller. The remote is compatible with all three NFC modes: Reader, Peer-to-Peer and Card Emulation.
“Making the smart home experience convenient and accessible to consumers is key to driving adoption. We feel allowing consumers to pay for services via a mobile phone from their couch or to easily transfer their own images and videos to the big screen are some of the benefits a smart home offers,” said Arsham Hatambeiki, Vice President, Corporate Product Strategy, UEI.
“Together with NXP, we have created a compelling solution both for consumers and the industry. We have been able to use our combined expertise to address core issues around device pairing, payments and authentication and bring the smart home vision to life.”
